Reflections In Writing: Entering His Rest

There is a sad, unfortunate, and all-too-common scenario that happens on the street corners of the majority of large cities across the world. The situation is familiar to us all because we each have faced it several times. And while the locations and people may be different, the circumstances are often similar.  Usually the setting includes a man or woman who is extremely unkept, smells and looks as though they have not showered for weeks, is often sitting next to the entirety of what they own, and their eyes and hands are outstretched pleading for assistance.

But I have often wondered what is more unfortunate – the awful situation of the sad and desperate beggar, whose situation was brought on by poor choices or unavoidable life circumstances; or is it actually found in the judgmental, scared, or selfish throngs of people who carelessly pass by these beggars (who also are human beings)?

The thoughts, intentions, or excuses that go through our minds during those sad, sometimes scary, and usually appalling moments when we are confronted by such a beggar often reveals much about our own character (flaws and potential). Do we find ourselves using some of these excuses to justify our actions (or inactions): they brought this upon themselves, they’ll use my money for alcohol or drugs, why don’t they just get a job, someone else will help them, I don’t have any money on me, etc. Perhaps we feel scared, threatened, or have little children with us that we want to protect – and understandably so. Or, perhaps our heart aches for them, we empathize, we wish we could help but are not in a position ourselves to help, or we literally don’t have any money on us but would otherwise help them, etc.

Regardless of how we act or think in these situations, the reality is that we each could probably do a little more to help those who have a lot less. And the reality is that the ‘beggars’ in our lives are not limited to those on street corners. They are the neighbor or friend struggling, the person in the checkout stand who is a few dimes short or having a bad day, the sick child at the hospital, the impoverished mother in a developing country, to even a family member in need. In fact, the person that stares at us in the mirror each morning is often a ‘beggar’ at times in life. And the definition of a ‘beggar’ is not limited to one in need of financial assistance - there is just as much physical, emotional, spiritual, and social ‘begging’ that goes on every day – by all of us.

There is a principle that every successful person that has ever walked this earth has applied, and is the leading reason why they are successful – it is: Give and you will receive! This reality is unexplainable, yet undeniably true. He who is selfish with his knowledge, time, or money never seems to amount to much in life. Conversely, the person who gives of their acquired knowledge, free time (even if he has to make free time), and generously gives of the money he has earned – somehow success, happiness, and more abundance always seem to follow!

Article Source:http://www.articlesbase.com/christianity-articles/help-the-beggar-to-achieve-your-own-success-1516712.html

To be clear from the outset – I completely understand and respect the fact that many readers of this article may not be Christians or believe in the Bible and even Christ Himself. The intention of this article is in no way to discuss and debate the doctrines and tentacles of Christianity in any way, or to disparage the beliefs or religious affiliation of any reader. The only intent is to prove that Christ and the Bible, regardless of whether you believe in them or not, actually teach the very fundamental elements of success. Contained in their teachings, we learn about the foundational attributes, mentality, and actions necessary to be successful in anything in life – be it physical, intellectual, mental, financial, or spiritual pursuits and goals.

However, having said that, I also do not apologize in any way of the belief that I personally have of the reality and divinity of Christ, that the Bible does contain truth, and of the witness I have obtained that His gospel is ‘the way, the truth,’ * and the path that leads us all back to our loving God and Father. Because of this fact, I have written this article from my perspective and belief, and again, acknowledge and respect the fact that not everyone will share this same outlook and belief. And yet, the principles taught by Christ and the Prophets and Apostles, are nonetheless still applicable to anyone, in any situation. Thus, regardless of your dream or goal – applying these principles will inevitably result in your success in anything in life!

More than a religious leader, historical figure, revered Jew, or inspiring philosopher, Christ was and is literally the Son of God. The truth, doctrine, and gospel that He established is in reality the very plan of the Father – a plan that outlines what we need to know, do, and become in order to return to His presence. To simplify and summarize the entirety of this gospel and plan that Christ taught – we need to know and do certain things and become a certain type of person in order to obtain the ‘reward’ – eternal life with God. In essence, those ‘certain things’ can be boiled down to three simple categories: the mental, physical, and spiritual – or perhaps as the Bible phrases it: faith, works, and character.

Christ taught us to have faith in Him and His gospel, to put forth the necessary actions He required, and to ‘become’ – or in other words, to develop a Christ-like character. For example, do not God and the Bible tell us that if we believe in Christ, we could have ‘everlasting life?’* Likewise, they teach us that ‘faith without works is dead,”* thus placing greater significance on the commandments to ‘love thy neighbor’* and to ‘keep my commandments.’* And lastly, the 10 commandments He gave to us through Moses were not recommendations or suggestions, but the very recipe we must follow – not only to become like Him, but to also return to live with Him, God, and our families forever!

Wouldn’t you agree that another way of phrasing the very same scriptural and spiritual principles would be: Think Big, Believe More, Act Now! Eternal life requires us to believe or hope in a dream, to have faith in the reality that it is possible (not to mention faith and belief in ourselves), a commitment to follow that path and hope (dream) regardless of what happens, a resolve to repent and get up after sins and failures, a determination to withstand temptation and put forth action daily, and persistence in developing habits of keeping the commandments and never giving up – enduring to the end. Ironically, the very same mentality, actions, and attributes necessary to obtain eternal life are the exact characteristics and elements to be successful in anything.

Below I have listed many of the elements of the law of success – the very mentality, actions, and attributes necessary to be successful in anything in life. I have also included a few of the many scriptural passages that prove not only that Christ and the Bible did actually teach the law of success, but that the law of success is in reality the very Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Desire: Mark 11:24; Prov. 10:24; 1st Cor. 14:1; Psalms 37:4; Prov. 21:25; Deut. 4:29;

Thoughts (Dream Big): Prov. 23:7; Phillip. 4:8; Gen. 24:63; Matt 9:4

Believe: Heb. 11:6; Matt 8:13; Matt 9:28; Matt 21:22; Mark 5:36; John 3:16, 36; John 11:25-27; John 20:27-29

Faith: Matt 9:22, 29; Matt 15:28; 2nd Cor. 5:7; Hebrews Ch. 11; James 2:17-22; Prov. 3:5

Commitment: Psalms 37:5; Prov. 16:3; Psalms 119:10; Joel 2:12; Luke 9:62; Psalms 112:7;

Dedication: Matt 22:37; 2 Tim. 4:7; Prov. 10:4; 2nd Peter 3:14, 17; 1st Cor. 15:58; Heb. 3:14; Phillip. 3:14

Self-Mastery: Prov. 25:28; Matt 16:24; James 4:7, 8; Exodus 20:3-17

Actions: James 2:17-22; James 1:22; Matt 7:24-29; John 14:15; Prov. 24:12

Persistence: John 8:31; Matt 10:22; James 1:12; Job 27:5; Col. 1:23; Heb. 12:1-7

Priorities: Matt 6:33; Deut. 6:5; Matt 10:39; Matt 22:37-40; Joshua 24:15; Prov. 22:6; Eph. 6:1-4; Gen. 18:19; Exodus 20:12;

Integrity: Job 2:3; Phillip. 4:8; Psalms 24:3-4; 1st Kings 9:4-5; Romans 12:17; 2nd Cor. 4:2; Job 27:5; ; Exodus 20:3-17; 2nd Cor. 13:7;

Give & Serve to Receive: Matt 25:35-40; Luke 6:38; Prov. 28:27; Luke 12:48; Prov. 21:26; Deut. 16:17;

Potential: Matt 5:48; Matt 19:26; Mark 9:23; Deut. 18:13; 2nd Cor. 13:11; Mark 14: 26; Gen. 17:1; Gen 6:9

Thus, do Christ and the Bible teach the law of success? The answer to that important question is a resounding YES! The Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us the very mentality, actions, and attributes we must possess – which He exemplified and commanded we should ultimately develop. It is actually the Law of the Gospel, or law of success, that we must follow in order to achieve our goals and dreams, obtain wealth or talents, and to develop the necessary spiritual character to obtain the real success and reward in life, which is eternal life with Him who is the Author of this law of success!

Jesus is called various things, but it appears that "Lion of the tribe of Judah" gets the attention of most American (can you say Republican party-ites?) Christians. With just two bombs, American “Rambo might” instantly killed 220,000 Japanese civilians (not military) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Of course the logic was that we needed to kill that many to save the lives of more!

Some questions can get real difficult and embarrassing to ask. How many people did Jesus kill? What was his opinion on war, killing, or even just being angry at someone? A reading of Matthew 5 would be a good place to start.

Things have changed in the last two thousand years; however, too many things have remained the same.

We still believe in capital punishment (legalized killing), we still believe in spending trillions of military hardware and new ways to kill people, and we have taken it a notch higher under George Bush. We now don't believe in just defending ourselves but we believe in "probable first strike". If a threat seems serious enough, we have the right to kill before we are attacked.

Of course knowing that for sure seems problematic.

Jesus said BLESSED are the PEACEMAKERS, not Hoo-Ah for the mighty warriors. It's a strange concept, this peace maker role. Rambo seems more like it but that's primarily because the Old Testament teaches that God was a "man of war". God killed his enemies so what's wrong with us killing God's enemies as well?

It's a tough question to answer unless you can see the Bible as progressive and see Jesus as one who corrected our erroneous vision of God!

As a spiritual-futurist, I have a BA degree majoring in history. One cannot know the future without knowing the past which holds clues to what is on the horizon. The world is in such a rapid expansion of knowledge that we are close to entering a tipping point that will forever change earth as we know it.

What does it mean to be a Christian man or woman? In the dictionary it is defined as an adjective meaning "of Jesus Christ or His teaching, adhering to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. So what does it mean of Jesus Christ? The little word "of" has many definitions but the one that fits best here is belonging to. Therefore, we can say that Christians belong to Jesus Christ or to His teachings, like someone belonging to a club or a society. This membership gives one a sense of identity and purpose.

The word Christian is not used very often in the Bible; in fact, it is only used three times. The first place it is used is in the book of Acts. In chapter 11:26, it states that it was the first time the term was used was in Antioch. The second time it is used is also in Acts, in chapter 26:28, where King Agrippa tells Paul after his testimony that he was almost persuaded to become a Christian. The last place it is used in 1Peter 4:16. It speaks about how as a Christian you suffer then you should not be ashamed but give glory to God. Paul and the other apostles knew what it was to suffer, and many of them died a horrific death, yet they would not renounce their faith. These men stayed true to their beliefs till the end because they had perfect love.

Christianity is more than a religion; it is a relationship, one of love beyond this world. It's the perfect love story. It is about sacrifice, giving, and unselfishness; of someone paying the price for your iniquities, shortcomings and mistakes. It is about being loved and loving. When you love someone, you want to be around them, get to know them better, do things for them to make them happy and many times you think about them above yourself. When we love Jesus Christ, we want these same things. Furthermore, when we realize that He loves us perfectly, no matter what we do, it is easy to love Him back.

Being a Christian is not like anything else in the world, it is about being accepted for who you are, being forgiving no matter what you do, and being loved with a perfect love that sets you free to be you. It is also a spiritual journey, an adventure of learning what our purpose is here on this earth. It's being a part of something bigger then our self and it is being in the most wonderful relationship possible.

As Christians we are told to love and not judge others, it is only when we know fogiveness can we easily forgive others. It is only when we know that we are totally accepted for who we are, can we accept others for who they are.
